Got a Minute? Finish Strong: Seize the Last Day of the Semester!

How can you effectively conclude your semester-long relationship with your students in a way that benefits both you and them? What are some  alternative methods to assess your teaching that aligns with your own teaching and learning values? Here are some tips that can help your students leave your class on a positive note and provide you with valuable feedback for your teaching practice:

  • Thank your students for taking your class.  Yes, that’s right!  They will appreciate knowing that you value them as a student. You could follow the example of one professor who also highlights one positive contribution made by each student in the class.
  • Design your own course survey asking students what they liked or didn’t like about the course.  What activities or lectures were particularly helpful in their learning?  Here is a Microsoft Form you can copy.
  • Ask your students to write a letter or make a short video for a future student of your class, giving them an idea of what to expect. You will likely learn some valuable insights about your own teaching practice.  You could then present these letters or videos to next semester’s class.
  • Organize a game show-type final review with teams and prizes to prepare for the final exam. The fun atmosphere may help alleviate some of the anxiety surrounding test-taking.
  • Make concluding remarks on how the broader issues covered in the class relate to the broader context of life. Then, ask students to share their perspectives.
