Teaching with Intelligence---Artificial Intelligence, that is

Has the threat of artificial intelligence got you worried?  Wondering how you should respond to ChatGPT and other generative systems of AI? Are you concerned about how this will affect your classroom?  Here are some suggestions to consider as we all grapple with the future of this new technology and how it will affect higher education.

  • Keep an open mind.  Remember that all technology was new at one time.
  • Play with the tools yourself.  It’s difficult to have an opinion about something you’ve never used. Start with  CHATGPT, OpenAI, or  Elicit.
  • Create a policy for how you will approach AI in your individual classroom.  Not sure where to begin?  Check out these syllabus statements from instructors across the country.
  • Open an honest and critical dialogue with your students. What are their concerns?  How would they use it?  What are the benefits?  What are the limitations?  What are the drawbacks?
  • Watch how some instructors are incorporating AI into their lesson plans as one way to teach critical thinking in the research process.
  • Use it as a time-saving teaching tool: Create more and varied examples, improve your own explanations by making them simpler, create low-stakes tests, assess student learning, or incorporate distributed practice into your teaching.  Check out this article for details and instructions on how to implement these time-saving ideas.
