From the CCNY Blackboard Administrator

Welcome Faculty!

Blackboard tips for you to help start the semester smoothly…

Remember, the most important step is to Make Your Courses Available for students to view. Uploading content does NOT make the course visible to students.

Adding Users to Blackboard Courses

From the CCNY Blackboard Administrator

Dear Colleagues,

On March 1, 2023, CUNY CIS removed the INSTRUCTOR role option to manually add users and assign user roles within courses. Multiple broadcasts were sent out to Instructors concerning this change.

We are aware, the removal of this option may have a trickle-down effect on our campus with respect to how Teaching Assistants (TAs), students completing incomplete courses, or others, are added to Blackboard courses.

Processes have been implemented on campus to assist with this change.

Option 1: Teaching Assistants and Co-Instructors with ACTIVE EMPLIDs can be added to the instructor table for the course on CUNYfirst. In 24 hours the course will display automatically on Blackboard.

  • Departments can reach out to the Scheduling Office for assistance on the instructor table in CUNYFirst.

Option 2: Blackboard Course Enrollment Request Form and FERPA Agreement can be filled out by the enrollee who will be enrolled in the course, the instructor and the head of the department. If any information is missing on the form the request will not be processed.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Course and Teacher Surveys Spring 2023 Have Opened!

Office of the Provost
To:Faculty
From:Tony Liss, Provost Tony Liss, Provost
Date:May 3, 2023
Re:Course and Teacher Surveys for Spring 2023
Dear Colleagues,
Please note that Course and Teacher Surveys have been sent to students directly to their CCNY email on April 27th. (You should have received notification from the CCNY Testing Office ctsurvey@ccny.cuny.edu for your classes this semester.)  The survey will close at midnight on May 18. The survey is password protected (the password is built into the survey link) and mobile friendly, so students can complete it on any device. The password is unique to each student and the survey can only be filled once for each class.
Please set aside some class time for students to complete the survey—this will increase completion rates. Students will receive automated email reminders, but we’ll get more participation if you also encourage them to complete the surveys. You can assure them that you will have no access to the survey results until after grades are submitted. You can also tell them that you will not even know if they have or have not completed the survey.
Please note that students in the School of Education and the School of Medicine will receive a different survey for courses in those schools. If for any reason, your class did not receive a survey, please send an email to ctsurvey@ccny.cuny.edu.
After the end of the semester, the survey results will be sent directly to your email account. Copies of the surveys will also be sent to Deans and Department Chairs.

Empowering Learning with Open Educational Resources and Digital Publications: A Conversation with Allison Levy (Director for Brown University Digital Publications)

As CUNY scales up its commitment to Open Educational Resources and its ability to support digital publications through the CUNY Open Press project, we are delighted to announce that Allison Levy, Director of Brown University Digital Publications , will join us for a conversation on her experience working with researchers, teachers, and authors to develop a range of free and accessible digital publications that enable a richer pedagogy for students with different learning styles.

Allison Levy is Director for Brown University Digital Publications. Serving in this role since 2017, she brings together key organizational, academic, and technological resources across the University to support new forms of faculty-driven scholarship, namely, born-digital, longform, multimodal works intended for publication by a university press. Beyond the Brown campus, she spearheads efforts at the industry level to advance the conversation around the development, evaluation, and publication of digital scholarship in the humanities. Levy, who holds a PhD in history of art from Bryn Mawr College, has served as founding editor of two scholarly book series and currently serves as co-chair of the College Art Association’s Committee on Research and Scholarship.

This series of Digital Humanities presentations has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this series do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
